Meet Christian
Hours after giving birth, Sandra and Peter learned that their 10-pound baby boy had breathing problems. Christian had tricuspid atresia, a rare heart defect which results in a lack of blood flow to the lungs. Before he was one month old, Christian underwent delicate heart surgery at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital to help improve his blood flow. Later, at about 10 months old, the first of two open heart surgeries was performed to help deliver oxygen-rich blood to his body and oxygen-deficient blood to his lungs.
Today, Christian is thriving at home in Virginia as he awaits his second procedure at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. His parents are grateful for his medical team. "The doctors and nurses always make sure we know exactly what's going on and that we understand," says Sandra. "I love everyone at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital."
